June 3, 2008 - Permitting Best Practices
7-9 pm Ipswich Town Hall, Ipswich, MA. Local permitting procedures for development projects differ from community to community. The process can often be time consuming and uncertain, and may create friction between developers and local permitting agencies. In 2007, the Massachusetts Association of Regional Planning Associations (MARPA) produced A Best Practices Model for Streamlined Local Permitting. The document outlines 25 tools local governments can use to make the permitting process easier to understand and more efficient. This workshop will provide planners, planning boards, conservation commissions, and other permitting bodies with information about these tools. Mark Racicot, the Manager of Government Services at MAPC and one of the authors of the MARPA document, will give an overview of the permitting tools. Planners from Essex County Communities will discuss how they are using best practices to facilitate the permitting process. This workshop is free to the public, however, advance registration is required. Contact Susan Jones Moses, Essex County Forum Smart Growth Circuit Rider at 978-340-0407 or susanjmoses@comcast.net. Please put “Permitting Best Practices Registration” in the subject line of your email.

Climate Change & Smart Growth - How does the long term prospect of climate change fit into today's Smart Growth planning? This workshop will cover effects of climate change on land use such as sea-level rise, model zoning to incorporate energy efficiency and alternative energy production into local bylaws, and community planning efforts around climate change preparedness.
Healthy Water for Healthy Communities - Development and conservation have a great effect on the quality and quantity of our water resources. Open space acquisition, low impact development, green building, and rehabilitation of brownfields are just some of the Smart Growth tools that can lead to restoration of our urban and suburban watersheds.
